FAQ
Questions specific to how this course runs Khan Academy alongside Canvas - the ones that come up in the general discussion forum every term. For everything else (journals, work logs, peer review, AI, deadlines), see the main FAQ.
Q: How Does Khan Academy Grading Actually Get Into Canvas?
A: It doesn't, automatically - there's no live integration between the two systems. What you see in Canvas for a Khan Academy assignment is a placeholder: a spot to hold the grade and a description of what the work is, not a link to the work itself. We run a script periodically that reads your actual scores from Khan Academy and posts them into Canvas.
Two things to know. First, don't panic if a grade you just earned isn't in Canvas yet - it'll show up on the next pass, not instantly. Second, and more importantly: if your work isn't showing up at all, the usual cause isn't a broken script. It's work done in a place the script can't find.
Q: Why Does It Matter That I Only Do Work Under the Assignments Page?
A: Khan Academy lets you wander into any lesson from search, from a direct link, from browsing - but only the items that show up on your class's own Assignments page, in the correct one of the three courses, are what the grading script looks for. Work done anywhere else doesn't count, no matter how real the completion feels on your end.
If you're not sure you're in the right spot: check that the course switcher at the top says the course number you're supposed to be in for that week, then work only through items listed on the Assignments tab. If it's not listed there, it's not part of the class this term.
Q: How Can I Tell If My Khan Academy Work Actually Registered?
A: Look at the left-hand menu while you're working through a unit. Items you've completed show a small white checkbox, and quizzes show your actual score right there in that menu. If an item doesn't have a checkbox or a score sitting next to it, it hasn't registered as done yet - no matter how finished it feels, and no matter what the Unit Mission percentage says.
If you've checked and you do see checkboxes and scores on everything, but Canvas still shows zero, post screenshots of that left-hand menu to the Grading/Regrading discussion board so it can be fixed and you get credit.
Q: Where Do I Check Whether a Grade I Earned in Khan Academy Is Actually in Canvas?
A: Go to View All Assignments in Canvas, then play around with the filters - To Do, Overdue, Completed, and so on.
Anything showing as Completed, with a green dot and a black checkmark, means Canvas already has that score - it counted. If something you're sure you finished in Khan Academy still isn't showing Completed there, that's worth checking against whether it actually registered on the Khan Academy side before assuming it's a grading mistake.
Q: Why Is My Unit Mission Score Low Even Though I Did the Work?
A: Unit Mission isn't a tally of the specific Materials Review, Exercise Totals, Quiz, and Unit Test assignments you see for that unit in Canvas - it's Khan Academy's own measure of skill mastery, and it moves based on how you perform on those skills anywhere in the course, including on Khan Academy's own Mastery Challenges (short quizzes Khan Academy serves up on its own, drawn from skills across every unit you've touched, not just this one). That's also why the opposite can happen: a student can show 100% on a Unit Mission while every one of that unit's graded Canvas assignments still reads "Not started" - Unit Mission and this unit's specific assignments are measuring different things, and one doesn't guarantee the other.
If your Unit Mission score is low, that's real information - you're getting questions wrong on some of those skills somewhere. Doing this unit's practice work thoroughly is still the most reliable way to raise it, but it isn't the only input, since Mastery Challenges you didn't choose to take can move it too. A low score after you've finished everything in the unit means keep practicing, not that a completed assignment failed to register - that's a different problem, covered above.
Q: What's the Deal With My Khan Academy Nickname?
A:
The grading script matches your Khan Academy account to your Canvas
record by name and login, and it can only do that if your Khan
Academy nickname is formatted correctly: Last, First -
yourlogin, where yourlogin is your Charlotte
login exactly - same spelling, same case, nothing extra. If it
doesn't match, your real work still won't show up as a grade, even
though you completed it.
This is worth getting right early and double-checking anytime a Khan Academy grade seems wrong before assuming the script is broken - a mismatched nickname is the single most common cause.
Q: Can I Retake a Quiz or Exercise? What About "Starting Over"?
A: Retaking is allowed, and expected - your score for most items is whatever your best attempt is, so working toward 100% through repeated tries is exactly how this is supposed to go. "Starting over" is a different, specific Khan Academy feature that wipes your unit progress entirely, and that one is off-limits.
Q: Do I Have to Attend Zoom Live?
A: No - live attendance is never required and never penalized. The recording is posted after each session and counts as course material either way, so you're expected to review it (fast-forward or skim if it's not useful to you) whether or not you were there live. Attending live with your camera on typically earns extra credit, but missing it costs you nothing beyond needing to watch the recording instead.
Q: Is There a Final Exam?
A: No. There's no final exam in this course.
Q: What if a Due Date in Canvas Doesn't Match Khan Academy?
A: Trust the date inside Khan Academy. The Canvas date is a manually maintained copy meant to match, and it occasionally lags behind a change made on the Khan Academy side. If the two ever visibly disagree, that's worth a quick post on the discussion board so it can get fixed - but for your own planning, go with what Khan Academy shows.
Q: Where Do I See What's Due Each Week, and How Do Modules Relate to Khan Academy Units?
A: Click Modules in the Canvas course menu on the left. Each module generally represents one week - that's named in the heading bar at the top of the module - and lists everything due that week, including its due dates (though there's often a 24-hour grace period beyond what's shown). Those due dates should correspond to the same work in Khan Academy.
Khan Academy, meanwhile, organizes its own work into Units - think of them like chapters. A single Khan Academy unit is often spread across, and sometimes split within, more than one Canvas module, exactly as laid out on the Modules page. So "this week's module" and "this unit" aren't always the same size or the same thing - the Modules page is still the one place to check for what's actually due when.
